Domesticated vegetables always smell so aloof.
Wild plants are different. They let you know by smell if something has been chewing on them. Often my first sign there are deer or rabbits in the area is because the plants tell me.
Wild plants welcome carnivores. Granted, it's a selfish “Come eat this guy!” welcome, but a welcome never the less.
